Whether you’re getting it for improved function, or for aesthetic reasons, undergoing a rhinoplasty – also known as a nose job – can result in an exciting and desirable transformation. However, before scheduling your consultation, be sure you’ve done your homework. When it comes to rhinoplasty, there are some factors you should consider before going under the knife. Here are a few.
You’ll Need About Two Weeks Off of Work
Because it’s a fairly fast and low-risk procedure, some patients expect that if they have the procedure on Friday, they will be back to work on Monday. The truth is you should be prepared to take at least two weeks off following the procedure. Many patients can feel worse on the third and fourth day than the first. Having patience with your recovery period is important as it can help you avoid putting yourself through any possible accidents or stress, giving your body a chance to heal properly.
Swelling will last about 10 days (or more!)
Expect acute swelling for up to ten days. Residual swelling will be diminished by the second month. Many people are surprised to discover that they continue to heal even a year after their surgery.
Put off the Photo Shoot
Expect bruising, similar to a broken nose; and black around your eyes within the first three to five days for up to a week. Be sure you don’t plan your surgery around any special events because it will take at least a few weeks for the swelling and bruising to resolve completely.
You Should Avoid Exercise for the First Month
Exercise leads to an elevated heart rate, which leads to swelling. This can affect your nose’s healing. Plus, you could hit your nose, which of course would not be good!
Don’t expect a good night’s sleep (yet)
Congestion, minor bleeding, swelling, and sleepiness are also normal symptoms of rhinoplasty surgery. While severe pain is rare, discomfort, stuffiness, swelling, and bruising can be easily managed with pain relievers.
You will have a splint
A nasal splint is placed the day of your surgery. During your follow-up appointment, the splint will be removed. Your follow-on appointment will likely occur a week after your procedure.
You May Need Revision Surgery
For skilled and experienced plastic surgeons like our practitioners at MAXiM, rates of revision surgery is very low. However, some people may require or request a revision rhinoplasty. They will need to wait one year before their second surgery.
