What is a Neuromodulator?

Neuromodulators

A neuromodulator is an injectable drug that relaxes and softens the skin by restricting facial muscles from contracting. The effects of this can be reduced or erased wrinkles, decreased oil production and facial contouring to provide a younger, refreshed appearance.

Botox, one of the most popular cosmetic neuromodulators, acts as a muscle relaxant. This procedure involves injections small doses of a neurotoxin solution. These differ from dermal fillers, a gel-like substance, that is injected into certain areas of the face to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, fine lines, and folds in the skin by restoring volume.

There are very specific uses for neuromodulators.

Best Uses for Neuromodulators

An experienced cosmetic surgeon or practitioner will not recommend neuromodulators for facial lines that are not caused by muscle movement. Wrinkles caused by sun damage or sagging skin will not benefit from a neuromodulator like Botox. After being injected with a neuromodulator, the muscles will be “frozen” or unmoving. It will take about a week for them to relax, and the effects can last up to 6 months.

Neuromodulators are appropriate for reducing the appearance of certain conditions such as aging or sagging skin, Crow’s feet (wrinkles around the outer corners of the eyes), excessive sweating or oiliness, frown lines and forehead folds and some other wrinkles.

Things to Consider Before Getting Neuromodulators

When consulting a qualified and experienced neuromodulator professional, they will review your medical history. If you’re in good overall physical, mental, and emotional health, they’ll discuss your expectations, potential risks and outcomes of the procedure. Many times, doctors will ask if a patient has recently taken or is currently taking any blood thinning drugs, over-the-counter medications and supplements, previous neuromodulator therapy, injectable antibiotics, muscle relaxants, or allergy, cold medicine or sleep medicine.

While neuromodulators are not typically painful, a topical anesthetic or ice pack may help reduce any discomfort. Following the procedure, you may experience soreness, mild bruising, headaches, and/or drooping eyelids. It’s important not to rub or massage around the treated areas, as the solution could be moved to another area.

The Neuromodulators Offered at MAXiM

The professionals at MAXiM Facial Aesthetics use three popular neuromodulators. These are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. Many of our clients have experienced successful results and submit rave reviews about Dysport. This product is newer to the neuromodulator market than the traditional, tried-and-true Botox. It offers a greater variety of sizes and molecular weight of proteins comprised in the solution, which allows it to more easily spread throughout an injection area and cover more space. Also, results have been noticed more quickly with Dysport thanks to this improved formula and distribution.

Interested in exploring nonsurgical ways to rid yourself of wrinkles? Contact MAXiM Facial Aesthetics of New York City and Long Island today to find out whether a dermal filler such as Juvederm or a neuromodulator like Botox or Dysport may be right for you.
