Are you ready to say so long to sagging, droopy eyelids? Eyelid surgery also called an eyelift or blepharoplasty, is one of the most popular facial procedures in the US.
Eyes are what people first notice about you, the results of an eyelift can be stunning. Many satisfied patients love how young, refreshed, and different they look after a single eyelid rejuvenation procedure.
An eyelift surgery involves removing sagging, droopy skin from below the eyes, as well as excess skin from the upper eyelids. The eyes are very delicate and surgery in this area requires the finesse of an experienced and knowledgeable surgeon.
At MAXiM, we offer various eyelid procedures. Specific types of eyelifts may be performed based on a patient’s individual needs.
Types of Eyelid Surgeries
An upper blepharoplasty is surgery performed only on the upper eyelid.
A lower transcutaneous blepharoplasty is surgery performed only on the area underneath the eyes. An incision is made just under the lower lashes. Meanwhile, a lower transconjunctival blepharoplasty is a procedure that is also performed around the area below the eyes, but this procedure creates an incision from inside the eyelid – which leaves no external scarring.
A brow lift, also called a forehead lift or browplasty, pulls the skin upward to raise the eyebrows. This procedure makes an incision at the top of the forehead, just beneath the hairline, to reduce scar visibility. It reduces the horizontal wrinkles on the forehead.
An upper and lower blepharoplasty is a traditional eyelift procedure that tightens the skin both above and below the eyes. An upper & lower blepharoplasty with a brow lift is a popular combination that tightens skin above and below the eyes and raises the position of the eyebrows for a more bright-eyed, pleasing appearance.
What to Expect
If you’re opting for a combination of surgeries, your surgeon will likely start on your upper lids first. An incision is created along the fold of the eyelid, then excess skin, muscle and possibly fat are removed, and the cut closed. On the lower lid, the incision is made just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower lid.
After the procedure, you’ll spend the rest of the afternoon in a recovery room and be monitored for complications. At the end of the day, provided you have no complications, you’ll be able to go home. After surgery, you may experience temporary symptoms such as blurred vision, light sensitivity, and puffy eyelids. To help ease any discomfort the day of the surgery, you can use ice packs on your eyes for 10 minutes every hour. In the following few days, you can apply ice packs on your eyes four or five times a day. Follow your surgeon’s instructions, but in general, you should keep your eyelids clean and use eyedrops or ointments as prescribed. Avoid painkillers, physical activities, and sleeping on your side or stomach.
While most people opt for some combination of eyelid procedures, every person is unique. Be sure to consult with your doctor about your goals and expectations. Together, you can decide which procedures may be most appropriate for you.
Besides providing you with a more youthful and alert appearance, an eyelift may even improve your eyesight should a droopy upper eyelid be interfering with your vision
