Dealing with Baldness: Here Are Your Options

baldness - hair loss

For many men (and women, too), the loss or thinning of hair can affect confidence and self-esteem. Male pattern baldness has a lot to do with your genetics, so you may feel like you cannot do anything about your baldness.

But there is hope!

There are many types of treatments and solutions to promote your own hair regrowth, including surgical options to replace bald sections of your scalp with sections of skin that do have hair. From topical treatments to hair transplants, you can help recreate the look and feel of a fuller head of hair.

Solutions for Hair Loss

Scientists have not yet found a way to prevent male pattern baldness or hair loss. However, there have been some significant developments in slowing down or stopping hair loss after it has started, or masking baldness with cosmetic methods, including the following:

Rogaine/Minoxidil

Rogaine is one of the most well-known topical drugs for promoting hair growth. This product affects the cardiovascular system by widening blood vessels, thereby allowing more oxygen, nutrients, and blood to flow to the hair follicles.

If Rogaine is used as directed, hair regrowth can be seen in 2-6 months.

Propecia/Finasteride

Finasteride is commonly known as Propecia. This oral medication affects hormones, preventing testosterone from converting into DHT.

DHT tends to shrink hair follicles until the hair falls out. Propecia can slow, halt, or even reverse hair loss within a year of beginning treatment.

While the active ingredient finasteride can have side effects, such as erectile dysfunction and a loss of libido, the possibility of a man experiencing these side effects is extremely low.

Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole has been reported to help stimulate hair regrowth, and it commonly comes in shampoo form. It is available as an over-the-counter shampoo in 1-percent ketoconazole, but the prescription-strength 2-percent form has shown better results in hair regrowth.

One of the most popular brands is Nizoral. This shampoo is an anti-inflammatory and antifungal medicated shampoo. Some hair loss is caused by inflammation, so this product can assist with different levels of this issue.

Cosmetic Concealers and Covers

Some of the medications don’t work for everyone or take many months to take effect. If you’re unable to wait, or if you’re still awaiting your results, there are powders or concealers that give you the appearance of thicker hair.

Toupees are also still used by men today and can have a very natural look. Some men also create the illusion of short or shaved hair with tattoos. This process is called scalp micro-pigmentation.

Hair Transplants

Finally, there’s the option of a hair transplant, which uses the patient’s own existing hairs from the back and/or side of the head (where some hair is usually still available) and is surgically relocated to the balding areas of the head.
